What Does It Mean for Ramadan to be “Blessed”?

Our Shaykh Muhammad Al-Amari حفظه الله said [summarized]:

Ramadan is Mubarak (blessed), and a means of attaining blessings and multiplying our good deeds, and this is a virtue specific to this month.

  1. The time during Ramadan is Mubarak. Allah said: “Ramadan is a month in which the Qur’an was sent down as a guidance for mankind.” [See: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185]
  2. The arrival of Ramadan is Mubarak. The Messenger of Allah said: “When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.” [See: Sahih Al-Bukhari 1899]
  3. The day of Ramadan is Mubarak. The Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever fasted the month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith (i.e. belief) and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven.” [See: Sahih Al-Bukhari 2014]
  4. The night of Ramadan is Mubarak. The Messenger of Allah said: “He who observed prayer at night during Ramadan, because of faith and seeking his reward from Allah, his previous sins would be forgiven.” [See: Sahih Muslim 759a]
  5. The deeds performed for one’s self in Ramadan are Mubarak. The Messenger of Allah said: “So when the month of Ramadan comes, perform Umrah, for Umrah in this month is equal to Hajj in rewards.” [See: Sahih Muslim 1255b]
  6. Showing righteousness to others in Ramadan is blessed. Ibn Abbas said: “Allah’s Messenger was the most generous of all the people, and he used to reach the peak in generosity in the month of Ramadan.” [See: Sahih Al-Bukhari 6]
