Question
A sole daughter is being forced by her parents to do a job, but this daughter is refusing to work, despite the job being in accordance to the Islamic guidelines.
- Will she be sinful if she disobeys her parents in this regard?
- Will the ruling be different if she is forced to work in a job which is not in accordance to the Islamic guidelines?
Answer
- She should obey her parents in everything that does not involve disobedience to Allah. Hence, if the job is in accordance to the Islamic guidelines, and it will not harm her Deen, she must do it if her parents tell her to. The Messenger of Allah said:
‘The pleasure of the Lord lies in the pleasure of the parents, and the displeasure of the Lord lies in the displeasure of the parents.’
Narrated by Al-Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 2; and it is Sahih. - If this job is not in accordance with the Islamic guidelines, or it will harm her Deen, then she must not take this job, even if her parents insist, because the Prophet said:
‘There is no obedience in that which involves sin; obedience is only in that which involves goodness.’
Narrated by Al-Bukhari in As-Sahih 7257
